Mythology for Modernity
The founders of Ostara started the business in Berkeley, CA by grinding their first batch of chocolate coconut butter on March 20th, 2011, which was the spring equinox. On the calendar it said "Ostara," but they didn't know what that meant.
Ostara is an ancient Goddess associated with the the spring equinox. She represents rebirth, fertility, and new beginnings. Christianity derived the German word "Ostern" from Ostara, which in turn became the English word "Easter".
The founders loved the mythology of Ostara and the synchronicity of making their first batch of coconut chocolate on the day of Ostara, so they chose the name for their business.
In August 2014, a new era for Ostara was born when the founders bowed out to pursue new career opportunities and sold the business to The Philosopher's Stoneground, another CA stone ground nut butter company specializing in sprouted almond butter.
The Philosopher's Stoneground is a big-picture company focused on facilitating the regeneration and flourishing of Life on Earth. Our mission is intelligent nourishment: spreading consciousness and nourishing all Life through delicious food designed for human consumption.
We create nut butters that are grown, produced, distributed, and consumed in a holistically healthy fashion for all places and organisms involved. We are grateful to continue to offer the Ostara products under their original brand name because we feel that her mythology is well-suited to our regenerative mission.
